For more than 6,800 people in rural Lesotho, a clinic in the mountain village of Manamaneng and its small contingent of nurses are their only source of essential healthcare.

Yet when the lights go off and the generator doesn’t work, night-time emergencies can turn into nightmares . . .

Manamaneng’s Mamma Thato

Meriam Sesiu, a practicing midwife for over 30 years, is the head nurse at this remote clinic. Her passion for delivering quality healthcare is widely recognized, so much so that she is often referred to as Mamma Thato, meaning “mother love” among locals.

In Nigeria, an investor pitch competition gives solar home system companies the skills they need to secure investor funding.

For off-grid energy companies, securing private and public financing is critical to expanding services and product offerings and connecting homes and businesses beyond the grid to electricity. A strong, well-articulated investor pitch can accelerate a company’s ability to attract funding for their proposed solution.

However, accessing funds to scale service offerings is a challenge for many solar home system companies which must compete for limited investment funds and overcome sector barriers such as credit risk, challenges to payment infrastructure, and high…

A new category of digital energy management solutions is emerging, purpose-built for African grid systems.

These lean, low-cost tools empower grid operators to improve reliability by identifying weak system components before they fail. They use grid analytics to forecast supply and demand dynamics on ever shorter time horizons that can inform dispatch and drive down the unit cost of energy.

Future energy distribution ecosystems incorporating these tools will empower energy managers to control costs, improve service delivery, and incorporate ever larger fractions of renewable power capacity.

One of Mozambique’s most significant power sector investments, the $506 million Temane Transmission Project (TTP), will commence construction later this year.

This Power Africa-supported project will deliver much-needed electricity from power plants at Temane in the northern part of Inhambane Province to the nation’s capital, Maputo, in the south via a 563 kilometer transmission line.

In December 2020, remaining project funders, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID), issued letters of effectiveness, approving disbursement of their portion of debt funding.

The TTP reached its first funding milestone in June and July of…

The Biden-Harris Administration selected Power Africa’s climate positive, energy prosperity producing Mega Solar project as a deliverable from the Leaders Summit on Climate.

Mega Solar is a partnership between Power Africa and the Governments of the Republic of Botswana and Namibia, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), and the African Development Bank to support the development of Southern Africa’s largest solar-generation project, which is estimated to result in 2–5 gigawatts of solar power. A memorandum of intent was signed between all partners this month.

Lack of access to a reliable and sustainable energy supply remains a pressing concern for approximately 85 percent of Malawian households, a condition that hampers economic growth and development.

“I use candles or paraffin lamps for lighting. This makes it difficult for my children to do their homework at night,” Chrissy Kasawe, Chalendewa, Malawi

To accelerate universal access to dependable electricity, in July 2019, Power Africa launched the Solar Home System (SHS) Kick-Starter Program for Malawi, providing financial assistance and operational support to help private sector SHS companies scale operations and sales in rural and urban communities.

“Thieves and bandits come when it is dark. Our customers are in need of security.”

— Alice Katula, Bboxx Manager, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Alice Katula lives in Bunia, the capital city of Ituri Province in the northeast corner of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a region that has struggled with political instability for decades. Here, where just five percent of 830,000 households have access to electricity, the dark nighttime hours mean heightened risk to families and property.

Alice is a business manager at Bboxx, a Power Africa partner company that designs, produces, distributes, and finances innovative solar systems…
